Insults and Disdain. Intrigue and Desire.

An impertinent stranger is thrown into Fitzwilliam Darcy's path and, even though he declares her tolerable but not handsome enough to tempt him, it is all he can do not to think of her.

Upon first making Mr. Darcy's acquaintance, Miss Elizabeth Bennet is quite fascinated with him. Then she discovers that the gentleman is haughty and above his company, and she wants nothing to do with him.

Still, the prospect of spending time in each other's company is beyond their power to resist. Will Darcy and Elizabeth stop denying the truth to themselves and find in the other what's been missing in their lives?

This story centers on Lizzy and Darcy meeting at Kent as opposed to Hertfordshire. In fact, the story seems to go a bit out of order because Bingley doesn't come in until the end.

It was interesting to see the story take place this way. Elizabeth certainly got to see Darcy's haughtiness and even heard the infamous "tolerable" remark, but without all that other baggage she flung at him in the original Hunsford proposal, she stood a better chance of liking him and forgiving him for the slight. Sure enough, she does fall in love with him. Darcy also has less objections going into this because he hasn't met the Bennets so all he has is the connections and lack of wealth objection. Even so, these two proved irresistible and fall in love.

Lydia's elopement does come up here, but in Kent, not Lambton. I liked how Darcy immediately offers to take Lizzy back to London before doing what we know he will do to save Lydia from Wickham (and herself).

Another thing I liked was that one brief moment where Anne was unlike most of her characterizations. She was a mini Lady Catherine in spouting off to Darcy why he needs to marry her and not the "country chit." That sure was refreshing. Just wish there was more.

Now, some may believe the story felt rushed and in some way I agree. However, sometimes I prefer a bit of straight to the point stories. I don't need the entire original story to be rehashed so I was ok with that.

Overall the story was enjoyable. But the 4 stars was given because it was just that: enjoyable. It wasn't amazing but good enough.

It's amazing to read about all the social restrictions of this period. I enjoyed this very much.
Really enjoyed this Darcy and Elizabeth. They met in Kent when Darcy was visiting his aunt and Elizabeth was visiting Charlotte instead of the Meryton Assembly. Unfortunately Darcy still uttered his infamous statement about Elizabeth not being handsome enough to tempt him to Richard when Elizabeth overheard the comment. Even though Elizabeth thought Darcy to be proud and arrogant, sitting next to him at dinner decided he was a very handsome man. As the interaction grew between them, Darcy darn near declared himself. Unfortunately dimwitted Lydia and wicked Wickham caused Darcy to intervene once again dealing with Wickham's treachery. Betrayed by Lady Catherine and Anne de Bourgh, Darcy returns to Kent to break ties with them. Arriving with Bingley to Netherfield, he is reunited with Elizabeth. Within days after their arrival, the new occupants attend the Assembly. Darcy arrives with Caroline Barnacle attached to his arm. When Darcy requested Elizabeth's hand for a set, Caroline's eyes radiates anger. By the second set requested, any manners escaped Caroline altogether. Arriving back at Netherfield, Caroline's tongue runs away stating her dislike for the Bennets. Fed up with Caroline's remarks, he grabs Georgiana's hand to edit the room, but turns and tells her that Elizabeth is the handsomest woman of his acquaintance. A few days later, Darcy proposes and their betrothal is announced. Their wedding makes him extremely happy knowing that his loneliness is behind him with his Elizabeth besides him. The enjoyment of Darcy's rapid feelings for Elizabeth was a pleasure to read.
This variation was indeed different and fun to read. The things that happened - happened in opposite order of what usually happens in other variations. Very different and uniquely wonderful!
Skipping Hartfordshire starting at Rosings takes away some of the missunderstandings from Canon. It does not follow that theire road to happiness is without obstacals. Lady C and Anne are espessially vile, Wickham makes his presence with a twist. It does allow theire romance a bit more time to develop which is lovely. I love the feeling of the nerve from the 2005 film that is often present in Dixons books. Worthwhile!
Hot, determined, steadfast Darcy. Lovely Elizabeth. So many variations take Elizabeth to the extreme of her personality and -- for me -- it makes her almost unlikeable. I think the author got it very right for both main characters in this one. I especially liked Darcy's confrontation with Lady Catherine.
The story was complex but rushed in the beginning. Over and again I was thrown out by terminology and conversation that was inappropriate for the era. I have read this author's p and p before. Could it be this was her first and I read them out of order? Not a good reflection of her skill
I am not sure if I can finish this one, as I find the first 1/4 rather boring. So far I cannot recommend buying this one, although I have enjoyed most (but not all) of this author's other books. I will write an addendum here if I can get myself to finish; but I know I should finish since I did spend money on it!
ADDENDUM Well, I have to say that it got better after the first 1/4, but I am not sure I would have paid this price for such a short novel that was less than outstanding. I expected a lot more and am disappointed.
